Team Leader-Analytical Research and Food Chain Surveillance
Food Standards Scotland, Aberdeen
Salary: Senior Scientific Advisor (SSO) Scale: £32,500 - £41,000
About Us
Food Standards Scotland (FSS) is an independent public body working for consumers in Scotland. We are here to ensure that information and advice on food safety and standards, nutrition and labelling is independent, consistent, evidence-based and consumer-focused.
An exciting opportunity has arisen within our Food Protection Science and Surveillance Branch for a candidate with strong experience in applying a wide range of statistical methods to real-world situations, preferably in a life sciences or public health field. As Team Leader in Analytical Research and Food Chain Surveillance you will be responsible for providing statistical, modelling and analytical advice across all of FSS’s key strategic priorities. In addition, you will head up a small team of scientists with responsibility for the design and implementation of risk based food sampling programmes in Scotland, and the provision of scientific advice relating to the monitoring and analysis of contaminants in the environment and the food chain. This post will also work on a project basis across FSS to advise on analytical approaches and to procure the statistical / modelling expertise required to ensure decisions are based on robust evidence. It will act as the key contact point between FSS and statisticians / analytical researchers across government.
You will be capable of designing statistical surveillance programmes to identify risks to the food chain and analysing relevant data sources to inform policy development and evaluation; including the analysis of data with multiple explanatory variables e.g. to improve understanding of trends in food safety and standards, and how these relate to public health risk.
You will be expected to keep up to date with the latest statistical developments to ensure they are included in our approaches, and know where to procure expert advice in analytical/modelling approaches which are applicable to our work.
