The Department of Architecture at the Aalto University, is the oldest and largest of the three schools of architecture in Finland. Since 1872, the architectural education in Finland has followed the European tradition of architectural education as part of the technical sciences. During the last decade, the department has strengthened its research activity and doctoral education to meet the future challenges of architecture and planning.
The Department of Architecture at the School of Arts, Design and Architecture invites applications for
POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER in the field of Design of Structures.
The position is connected to the newly established professorship of Design of Structures, a joined appointment between the Department of Architecture and the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering. The professorship explores integrative design methods and techniques at the threshold between the physical and the digital and promotes a design-oriented understanding of structural design.
The main purpose of the postdoctoral researcher is to support and strengthen research at the Department of Architecture. The duties of the postdoctoral researcher include:
- to conduct research and to develop and to lead new research initiatives
- to support teaching duties of the professorship
- to support administrative duties of the professorship
The position is for a 2-year-period starting in February 2016 or as agreed upon. Salary will be determined upon competence and experience of the chosen person following the salary system of Finnish universities. The position is located on the Otaniemi campus of the Aalto University in the premises of the Department of Architecture.
Qualified candidates for the postdoctoral position should hold a doctoral degree - preferable in architecture or engineering - and have adequate experience in research or practice at the intersection of art, architecture and engineering. Experience in high quality publications and conference papers is essential. Ability for multidisciplinary research is considered an advantage as well as experience in grant writing. Fluent skills in English language (spoken & written) and knowledge of contemporary analytic and design software is required. Applicants are expected to be at the early stages of their academic careers and show potential for academic development.
