The culture and politics of film distribution: Italian cult film and Nollywood

You're invited to attend a panel discussion on the culture, politics and economics of film distribution, with a focus on cult cinema in in Italy, and Nollywood in Nigeria (now the second largest film industry in the world). It will be of interest to those studying or planning on working in the film industry, particularly in a global context.
This event coincides with a visit to BCU by Dr. Ikechukwu Obiaya, who is based at the Pan-Atlantic University in Nigeria, and researches Nollywood.
The event is free and refreshments will be served.

PRESENTATION TOPICS
Dr. Xavier Mendik (Birmingham School of Media): Releasing the Reprehensible: The Cine-Excess of 1970s Italian Cult Cinema.
Dr. Oliver Carter (Birimingham School of Media) Preserving All’Italiana: Fan Curation of Italian Cult Cinema: This paper explores how fans of Italian cult cinema, specifically the giallo, curate archives through their capturing, preserving and sharing of Italian cult cinema.
Dr. Ikechukwu Obiaya (Pan-Atlantic University, Nigeria) The challenges and the changing landscape of film distribution in Nigeria
Ezinne Igwe (Birmingham School of Media) will be discussing her PhD research in progress on the implications of the recent transformations currently reshaping the Nigerian film industry.
The panel will be facilitated by Dr. Kirsten Forkert (Birmingham School of Media).
ABOUT THE PANELISTS
Dr.Xavier Mendik is Associate Professor in Film and Director of Postgraduate Studies in the School of Media, from where he runs the Cine-Excess International Film Festival (www.cine-excess.co.uk). He is author/editor/co-editor of nine volumes on cult cinema, most recently Bodies of Desire and Bodies in Distress: The Golden Age of Italian Cult Film 1970-1985.
Dr Oliver Carter is a Senior Lecturer in Media and Cultural Theory at the Birmingham School of Media and a founding member of the Body Genres research cluster at the Birmingham Centre for Media and Cultural Research. Dr Kirsten Forkert is a Lecturer in Media Theory in the Birmingham School of Media.
