Having been out of the office all day yesterday I'm just catching up with the e-forum messages. I'm Helen Williams, Metadata Manager for LSE Library and part of the CIG committee.
One of my top tips is to try and keep looking out at the audience - or if you're nervous about that, looking up and looking to the back of the room! In the early days I was sometimes put off by the sea of faces looking back at me, and thinking that no one looked very interested - but as Gordon's said - when a number of people come and talk to you about it afterwards, you realise there is a lot of interest, and the sea of blank faces is probably due to concentration or note-taking! If there are faces in the audience who are smiling or nodding in response, then I try to look up in that direction as well because I know it will encourage me!
Speaking at conferences has changed my audience participation as well, and now I try to smile at conference speakers who are clearly trying to engage with their audience!
I'm in and out of meetings like a yo-yo today, so may not manage to respond in real-time, but thanks for all the useful top tips and discussion - it's very helpful!
Best
Helen

Good point Debbie. On a slightly related but off topic note it's good to keep a record of rejected proposals. You never know when they can be turned into something else.
