CAS members may be interested in this meeting of the Computer Conservation Society
Dear Fellow Members
The first meeting of the 2015-16 session of the Computer Conservation Society on Thursday September 17th when Prof Alain Guyot will talk about the Mechanism of Calculation.
This lecture concerns the topic of mechanical calculation. It will focus on advanced and little-known techniques.. For example the carry look ahead technique, invented by Charles Babbage was found again by Olivetti for the Summa Quanta in 1949, the continuous addition, invented by Tchebychev, was fully used in the Marchant Figurematic in 1950. Then it explains how semi-automatic, automatic and reduced multiplication, automatic division and automatic square root extraction were implemented with cogwheels. Some of those techniques were found in the very early electronic calculators but rapidly became obsolete.
As usual the meeting will be held in the Fellows Library of the Science Museum, London SW7. The room will be open from 2PM to meet fellow members and to allow the meeting to start promptly at 2..30PM.
Our meetings are open to all free of charge so do pass on this invitation to others who may be interested in this meeting or other CCS activities.
The advance programme for the 2015/6 season will be found soon at http://www.computerconservationsociety.org/lecture.htm
I look forward to seeing you at what promises to be an interesting afternoon.
Roger Johnson
