NIHR Research Methods Fellow
Fixed term for 2 years from October 2015
University of Leeds
Leeds Institute of Clinical Trials Research
Clinical Trials Research Unit (CTRU)
An exciting opportunity for a highly able and numerate graduate to start a career in health research within a well-established team and undergo two years of research training in, and experience of applying, statistical methods relevant to clinical trials research in the NHS.
The Clinical Trials Research Unit (CTRU) at the University of Leeds is a leader in the field of clinical trials and was one of the first 26 clinical trials units across the UK to be awarded full registration status by the UK Clinical Research Collaboration. The Unit conducts national and international randomised clinical trials in a variety of clinical fields and development phases (cancer, cardiovascular disease and stroke, musculoskeletal diseases, mental health, obesity, skin and care of the elderly), covering phase I-IV trials. The CTRU has a strong methodological portfolio associated with clinical trial research. Our aim is to support the challenge of changing clinical practice for the better and our past results and current work has already helped to do this – http://medhealth.leeds.ac.uk/LICTR
We are looking to appoint a highly talented and enthusiastic individual who is keen to pursue a career in medical statistics. You will have a good honours degree (2:1 or higher), with a substantial mathematical or statistical component. Candidates that do not already have an MSc with a substantial statistical component will be supported, in the first year, through a full-time MSc in Medical Statistics. Candidates that already have obtained an MSc will undertake selected modules from local MSc programmes, whilst being introduced to, and immersed in, the ongoing programme of work at the CTRU.
In the second year, you will be supervised to undertake a methodological research project on the design and implementation of early phase clinical trials in cancer. You will be encouraged and supported to apply for an NIHR doctoral training fellowship to extend this research. Alternatively, there may be opportunities for progression as a medical statistician within the CTRU.
You will join a well-established and supportive team of over 25 statisticians and be mentored by Professor Julia Brown and Dr Sarah Brown. Working in a multidisciplinary team including statisticians, programmers, clinicians, health economists, health service researchers and trial managers, you will have excellent interpersonal, communication and time management skills. You will be exposed to a wide range of statistical activities, including preparing grant applications, design, conduct and analysis of clinical trials. There will also be an opportunity to further broaden your expertise through general consulting to health professionals, depending on individual interests.
