"Synthetic Life: how far could it go, how far should it go?"
Date: 13 October 2015
Time: 19:00-20:30
Venue: The Royal Institution
Synthetic biology is a new, intriguing technology that could have a huge impact on humans and our environment. A panel of experts will outline the process of designing and building new life forms and discuss the ethical challenges we will face. What impact could synthetic biology have on everyday life, and how far could we, and should we, take this revolutionary science?
Dr Adam Rutherford, geneticist, author and broadcaster will chair a discussion between:
Professor Paul Freemont: Co-director of the EPSRC for Synthetic Biology and Innovation and the National UK Innovation and Knowledge Centre for Synthetic Biology (SynbiCITE) at Imperial College London.
Professor Robert Edwards: Head of the School of Agriculture, Food & Rural Development, Newcastle University.
Dr Louise Horsfall: Lecturer in Biotechnology at the University of Edinburgh and co-chair of the Bioengineering and Bioprocessing Section of the European Federation of Biotechnology.
Dr Susan Molyneux-Hodgson: Director of Research and Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Sheffield.
