Dear Colleagues,
This morning, I received an off-list query asking whether there are any studies that rank leading design conferences or leading design journals.
There have been two studies on journals. In 2008, a quick study yielded a list of over 200 design journals with a publication of preliminary results:
Friedman, Ken, Deirdre Barron, Silvana Ferlazzo, Tania Ivanka, Gavin Melles, and Jeremy Yuille. 2008. Design research journal ranking study: preliminary results. Melbourne, Australia: Swinburne University of Technology Faculty of Design. Accessible online: http://hdl.handle.net/1959.3/45468
In 2009, a deeper and more rigorous study refined these results, publishing a final list of 40 journals respected widely across the field, and a rank-ordered list of 14 leading journals.
Gemser, Gerda, Cees de Bont, Paul Hekkert, and Ken Friedman. 2012. “Quality Perceptions of Design Journals: The Design Scholars’ Perspective.” Design Studies (2012), p. 4. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.destud.2011.09.001
The 2009 study is the better and more useful study, based on rigorous research and a wide survey of experts.
Rather than send copies one by one to those who wish to read it, I have posted a copy of Gemser et al. (2012) to my Academia.edu page. Interested list members will find this in the “Teaching Documents” section of the page. This article will only be available for one week. I will take it down on Saturday, September 6 at midnight GMT.

There are no similar studies on research conferences in design. My view is that there is no point participating in any conference organised primarily for profit by a conference company. The purpose of a conference is to meet, reach, and listen to work by research colleagues and members of serious research communities. These conferences are generally organised by research societies, universities, and not-for-profit organisations, including collaborative projects among universities and some research conferences organised by professional associations. To an increasing degree, some of the best conferences are organised as invitational conferences within research networks. Many of these are fully funded and charge no fees whatsoever.
