Hi folks,
I hope it is ok for me to chip in here and share a bit of my experience. It feels a bit odd speaking about a person when they are not necessarily part of the conversation, so I am just going to let you know what my experience has been.
When I first started thinking about #walkthetalk2015 I emailed Jamie to ask if he thought there was any reason I should not do it. I did so because the plan was and still is, to walk from the BPS office in Leicester to the BPS office in London. My hope was that it would in part encourage the BPS to participate more in speaking out on social issues and the impact social policies such as this dreaded Welfare Bill are having on people's psychological wellbeing. I also asked Jamie if he would like to join me for a day of the walk.
He got back to me very quickly with a lot of encouragement and said he would join me for the whole walk. He wanted to do this as an individual and hoped he could do it as BPS President. In addition to this he has also pressed for the publication of a number of BPS public statements which I think take the BPS in a more socially conscious route. See those relating to the Work Capability Assessment for example, which I had direct involvement in producing.
We all know the challenges of getting large organisations to change their cautious approach, but I witness Jamie pressing for this and along with Peter Kinderman, I see positive signs of a more vocal, attentive and aware BPS.
I do not send this email by way of PR, or on behalf of Jamie / Peter / anyone else, just to share my experience of another person. None of us are free from faults, and I think most of us do things with the best of intentions. As we know, we are often not judged on our intentions but the interpretations of our actions. I guess we have to answer to ourselves on that one.
As for the military work, I personally cannot imagine wanting to work in this area. Nor would I want to be connected with a system which promotes war, even in the name of defence. However I do appreciate that often the areas in which one does not want to work, can often be the areas which need us most.
It would be absolutely wonderful if as many of you as possible can join us for the walk. I've attached a leaflet and here's the website - www.walkthetalk2015.org. Even if you join for just a section of the walk, it'll make for a great opportunity to talk about some of these issues in person. If you want more info., please drop me a line.
Kind regards
Ste

Dear all,
I too was sceptical when I read Jamie's resume a year ago, however I join my voice with Anne and Mark in saying that thus far, Jamie has shown himself willing to speak out for the marginalised. He will be participating in 'walk the talk', and I don't think it's all rhetoric.
So, this is perhaps the time for the BPS to be making a stand in a way that has not been possible in the past, and I support the direction of 'travel'.
Warm regards from a chilly South Africa!
Jacqui :-)
