GENERAL INFO

TEI’16 invites proposals for one day or optionally one and a half day Studio/Workshops (S/W). These S/W’s will be held on Sunday the 14th of February 2016 with a possible extension of half a day on Tuesday the 16th of February. We suggest considering the optional half day extension for S/W’s that may require multiple iterations, contextual fact-finding or observations, field experiences, ordering parts/supplies, or time for off-site assembly and/or building.



Successful S/W proposals combine theoretical and practical aspects within the realm of (design) research. We welcome proposals for hands-on skills dissemination with a theoretical twist as well as proposals that dive deep into theory but consider a practical application. Demonstrating the connection of the theory to real-world contexts is of especial interest. We wish to teach both the hands and the mind although not necessarily in equal parts.



We ask S/W proposers to indicate where on the continuum of practical and theoretical skills their S/W proposal can be placed and provide some insights to whether theory will drive the practical or if through practical exploration, theory may be developed.



S/W proposals ideally accommodate around 15 participants and we encourage the S/W to be open to any conference participant although this is ultimately at the discretion of the proposers.



Each Studio/Workshop will be represented by a 4-page extended abstract that will be included in the Proceedings and published in the ACM Digital Library. Organizers are also encouraged to arrange for later publications of an S/W intellectual and creative output where appropriate.



Studio/Workshops provide experiences to embody (design) research by combining the practical and hands-on with academic debate/discussion around the chosen topic. We encourage new and enriching perspectives on the field of tangible, embedded, and embodied interaction and expect that proposers seek inspiration in the theme of the conference: ‘our body is our manual’ as explained on the first page of the TEI’16 website.



There are two formats for S/W for TEI’16 - 1 day and 1.5 days. The 1 day S/W will include a 3 hour morning session and a 3 hour afternoon session on Sunday, February, 14. The 1.5 day S/W will include a 3 hour morning session and a 3 hour afternoon session on Sunday, February 14 and a 3 hour session afternoon session on Tuesday, February 16.



At least one author of each accepted submission must register for the conference and the S/W before the early registration deadline, in order for the S/W to be included in the conference program and the final 4-page S/W description to be published in the conference proceedings. S/W proposers are encouraged to recruit participants themselves. A minimum number of registered participants will be required for a S/W to take place. All participants will need to register for the S/W they are attending.



FORMAT

Submit a proposal as two documents (a “description” document and a “logistics” document) formatted according to the ACM Extended Abstract guidelines (see below).



DESCRIPTION document (4 pages maximum):

• Part 1A: Abstract (150 words maximum)

• Part 1B: Indicate S/W duration (1 or 1.5 day)

• Part 1C: Detailed proposal description

• Part 1D: Topics to be covered

• Part 1E: A positioning in the continuum of practical and theoretical skills

• Part 1F: Learning goals/Discussion objectives

• Part 1G: Supporting documents / images or photographs / references

LOGISTICS document (4 pages maximum):

• Part 2A: Event coordinator bio(s) (100 words each maximum)

• Part 2B: Proposed schedule (incl. if 1 or 1.5 day, plus detailed timeline)

• Part 2C: Bill of materials (as needed)

• Part 2D: Estimated budget (as needed)

• Part 2E: Technical Requirements (equipment and space conditions)

• Part 2F: If required: a draft ‘Call for Position Statements’

REVIEW PROCESS FOR STUDIO/WORKSHOPS PROPOSALS

The review process will take into account the organizers’ ability to clearly articulate a plan for a Studio/Workshop that will provoke discussion of TEI-related issues and/or lead to a rich hands-on experience. Additional criteria are: the expected community interest level in the topic, available equipment, how the topics and processes covered complement other studio offerings and offer an S/W within the continuum of practical and theoretical skills. The Studio/Workshops Chairs may suggest organizers of submissions that are similar in topic to collaborate on a joint session. In order for the Studio/Workshop extended abstract to appear in the conference proceedings, at least on organizer of each S/W must register for the conference and their Studio/Workshop, and organizers must have secured the commitment of a minimum number of participants to attend, by the early registration deadline.



ORGANIZER RESPONSIBILITIES

Before the Conference

• Arrange for delivery of needed materials (options include bringing items in-person or shipping to the venue)

• If required: call for position statement submissions, and manage a review of papers

• Prepare for 12 to 15 participants

• Develop a final agenda of activities, and review with TEI’16 Studios and Workshops Chairs

• Recruit participants: organizers of an accepted session are encouraged to set up and maintain a web page providing information about their Studio/Workshop. A minimum number of registered participants is required for a S/W to take place. It is recommended to start outreach to potential (groups of) participants as soon after the acceptance notification as possible.



At the Conference

Organizers are responsible for setting up the Studio/Workshop before the start of the session, leading discussions and sustaining participation.



After the Conference

It is encouraged that you communicate your Studio/Workshops results to a larger audience after the conference. In addition to any presentations, you may make material available about the event for public consumption, self-promotion, and promotion of TEI conferences (after consent of your participants should you be showing their likeness through photos/videos and if showing their S/W projects). This material can range from online photos and videos, design documents and/or schematics, a blog, or a report for publication in an ACM Bulletin, or a similar venue.
