The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse has just published its terms of reference and has written to a range of organisations, including local authority, religious and NHS bodies, requesting them to retain certain records likely to be of use to the Inquiry as a matter of priority. These will include older records which have been transferred to archival institutions. The guidance is available here:
https://www.csa-inquiry.independent.gov.uk/news/chair-of-the-inquiry-issues-guidance-on-destruction-of-documents
The Inquiry is constituted under the Public Inquiries Act 2005 and the Inquiry Rules 2006, with powers to request the production of documents. It is also likely that this process will lead to other records requests in respect of any resulting police investigations or civil proceedings.
The National Archives is currently investigating ways in which it can best support the inquiry to achieve its objectives and as part of this we are considering the likely impact on archive services. We will keep the archive sector informed of developments.
