Hi Jackie,
We had a Abattoir/Knackers Yard in our Borough that is now being developed for housing. The site was used for the disposal/incineration of BSE cattle and there was a lot of discussion at the time about the risks of prions. In the end, the developer flattened the site and removed and incinerated everything including the topsoil down to the underlying clay layer and decided to leave it as recreational space.
Not sure about any guidance on prions and their viability in soil ? Maybe try DEFRA or Public Health England ?

Subject: Former Abattoir / Meatmarket
I'm currently looking into undertaking some site investigations across a large former abattoir / meatmarket site thats been lying vacant for many years.
Is anybody aware of any useful guidance beyond the industry profile for thie land use? Particularly in relation to the "non-standard" potential contaminants potentially encountered such as pathogens etc.
Thanks very much,
Jackie
