If you see the NVIDIA messages that followed your previous error message, then you are using the vendor's driver and getting hardware acceleration.
I find that analysis performance is probably not as good on my CentOS 6 boxes using the stock python 2.6 as on my CentOS 5 ones where I have installed Python 2.7 (because the stock python and tk there is just too slow). Might be worth a go - see

you should not need to install tcl/tk as CentOS 6 already has 8.5, but you may find 8.6 is even better.
