UNESCO UK Memory of the World Committee
********Call for new committee members***********
The UNESCO UK Memory of the World Committee oversees the nomination, assessment and inscription of entries on the UK Memory of the World Register. This is a register of outstanding nationally significant items or collections of documentary heritage maintained in association with the international UNESCO Memory of the World Register.
Documentary heritage is interpreted in its widest sense to include all forms in which intellectual content is recorded and preserved. Inscriptions on the UK Register include:
- London County Council bomb damage maps
- The Domesday book
- The WVS/WRVS Narrative Reports
- Death warrant of King Charles I
- Films of the Amber Collective
Inscriptions are added to the Register biennially; the next inscriptions will be made in 2016.
We are looking for five new members of the committee, to replace retiring members and to properly reflect the diversity of the archival sector.
We are currently looking for members in the following areas of expertise, who work directly with their documentary Heritage:
- Business archives
- County record office
- Academia (pre 19th century)
- Manuscript librarian
- Subject specialists (e.g. medieval documents, maps and plans, etc.)
Applicants should have at least 5 years experience in their field of expertise.
The principal job of the Committee is to assess and inscribe items on the UNESCO UK Memory of the World Register, but participation in other work of the committee in-between nominations will be required.
The time commitment is heaviest during nomination assessment periods and will equate to approximately 3 days during February (every two years). Members are also expected to attend one face to face meeting in London, March (every two years). Quarterly conference calls are also held.
Membership of the Committee is on a four year term, with a maximum of two terms. New member's terms will start in October 2015.
Membership of the committee is on a voluntary basis and unfortunately no expenses are available.
Anyone interested in applying to become a member of the UNESCO UK Memory of the World Committee should send a copy of their CV. They should also include a covering letter setting out why they would like to join the committee and listing their areas of specialism with regards to specific types of documentary Heritage.
