Statistical Services Unit (SSU), School of Mathematics & Statistics
(SoMaS), The University of Sheffield
The University of Sheffield delivers world-class research in Biomedical
Life Sciences across a range of academic disciplines. University
researchers are at the forefront of research in the biological and
medical sciences and contribute to developments in understanding and
treating diseases that affect both humans and other mammals. They play a
vital role in developing drugs and treatments for pressing health
problems including cancer, deafness, heart disease, Parkinson’s and
muscular dystrophy. The implementation of the 3Rs (replacement,
refinement, reduction) is implicit in this research, and offers a key
area where statistical thinking and techniques can play an important role.
The SSU, within the SoMaS, is looking to appoint a Principal Consultant
to work closely with Biomedical Life Science researchers across the
University and the Senior Experimental Manager (Head of Biological
Services for the University). The main focus of the role will be to work
to improve statistical research design for researchers and respond to
the 3Rs agenda. In fulfilling the role, you will spend a significant
amount of your time interacting with research groups in the Faculties of
Science and Medicine, Dentistry and Health (MDH). This time will include
attending laboratory and research meetings to understand the research
problems and statistical needs and to build relationships with Principal
Investigators, and within MDH will also include attending medical
statistics journal clubs and problem-solving meetings within ScHARR
(School of Health and Related Research) to gain discipline-specific
support for your professional development. The appointment is initially
for 3 years.
You will provide a statistical consultancy, training and advisory
service, within a commercial and academic environment, to a wide range
of researchers and contribute to both the management and development of
these services within the SSU and the wider University. You will deliver
and manage these services with high levels of experience, responsibility
and independence of working and provide input into the negotiation of
contracts, overall management of projects, supervision of other members
of staff, and development of the SSU and its services. You will report
to the SSU Director and will attend regular update meetings within
Biological Services; you will also attend University committees relating
to Biomedical Life Sciences research and will report to the Biological
Services Management Board via regular reports to the Board.
You will have a postgraduate qualification in Statistics or equivalent
experience.
