Medical Statistician and Trainee Medical Statistician 



We are looking for medical statisticians to join the Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit to support the clinical research being undertaken by the unit. We have vacancies for both experienced (grade 7) and new or recent graduates (grade 6) who may be interested in our Trainee post.



The Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit (BCTU) is one of the three trials units within the College of Medical & Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham. Work across the trials units is coordinated by the Birmingham Centre for Clinical Trials (BCCT). BCTU was established in 1997 and has evolved into one of the largest and most effective clinical trials units in the UK, undertaking high quality late phase clinical trials, diagnostic and test evaluation studies, systematic reviews and methodological research across a wide range of diseases (obstetrics and gynaecology, neurodegenerative diseases, coloproctology, surgery, renal disease, burns, trauma and critical care). The Unit has a very strong track record of coordinating cutting edge clinical trials from initiation through to completion. BCTU currently employs over 70 people with specialist statistical, methodological, trial management, administrative and computing expertise, who oversee the design, coordination, analysis and reporting of over 40 studies, and provide a supportive and friendly atmosphere in which to work. 



The BCTU is a UK Clinical Research Collaboration registered Clinical Trials Unit, which recognises the Unit’s experience in co-ordinating multi-centre clinical trials, the presence of expert staff and robust quality assurance systems, and evidence of long-term viability of capacity for trial co-ordination. Our aim is to help stimulate, develop, conduct, support, analyse and report high quality clinical research to generate more reliable evidence on the best treatment and tests for a wide range of diseases. The post holders will provide statistical advice and support in the design, conduct and analysis of a variety of studies within BCTU.



Applicants should be a numerate graduate, with a post-graduate degree in statistics. For the Grade 7 post, candidates with a post-graduate degree in another scientific discipline and experience (at least 2 years) of working as an applied medical statistician will also be considered.

The posts are available for 12 months in the first instance, with a strong possibility of a longer contract.  The starting salary for the Trainee Medical Statistician post (post number 54545) will be at Research Grade 6 (£25,513 to £27,864 with potential progression to £31,342). The Medical Statistician post (post number 54544) will be at Research Grade 7 (£28,695 to £37,394 with potential progression to £39,685).
