Hi all,
As just discussed in the gridpp tech. meeting, this is the announcement of the new Janet 'end-to-end performance initiative' which is (more or less) the resurrection of/successor to the High Throughput Networking SIG. There is a mailing list, which I would encourage anyone involved in data transfers, network monitoring or IPv6 to sign up to.
There is an attachment, not sure whether that's going to make it through the list or not. If it doesn't, you're not missing much since it's mostly just a neatly formatted version of what's in the email.

Subject: [HPC-SIG] Janet end-to-end performance initiative (e2epi)
Hi,
I’d like to introduce the list to a new initiative being developed by Jisc, namely the Janet end-to-end performance initiative (e2epi), for which I am under secondment to Jisc from the University of Southampton.
The attached 2-page overview describes at a high level the aims of the project, and how you can get involved. The general thrust is to identify and engage with a wide variety of Janet communities with an interest in or need for high performance networking, to determine current practices and challenges, and from those discussions to elicit and help share best practices within and between the communities.
At present, we’re starting to visit sites and attend relevant meetings. Some of you may have noticed I was at the most recent HPC-SIG meeting in Birmingham, which I found very interesting - clearly there’s a lot of very good practice already in this group. I met a number of new people with whom I shall be following up discussions over the coming days. I also hope to be at the Disruptive Technologies meeting at UCL tomorrow, if anyone wishes to catch me there.
Note that the scope of the e2epi project goes beyond the high throughput requirements that are generally typical in the HPC-SIG community - it’s also about low latency applications, or scenarios where organisations may be increasingly outsourcing functions, on Janet or beyond, putting a bigger dependency on the network.
We’re aiming to hold an workshop in London in September or October (date tbc soon), which we hope will foster initial discussion and knowledge exchange. You can also join a new Jiscmail list, [log in to unmask], which is open to all interested parties, by visiting https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/webadmin?A0=E2EPI.
Please feel free to get in touch if you’d like to talk to us, or perhaps have an interesting example to present or add to the agenda for the workshop.
Best wishes,
Dr Tim Chown
