There is no excuse for not paying the Living Wage, at the very least. Respectable staff remuneration should always be factored into the planning of science communication projects. Failure to do so displays poor project management, and disrespect for the people who do the actual work.
As Richard says, you should also be in a union. Overall improvements in wages and working conditions require collective bargaining and constructive pressure on employers. In our field of work, the principal union in Britain and Ireland (and also continental Europe for English-language media) is the National Union of Journalists...
