Dear All,

Many thanks to those who took part in our survey, below you'll find a summary of the results. If you'd like the raw data then please do let me know and I'll pop it in an email to you. 

Most universities surveyed offer their students guided tours and workshops/demonstrations. See the results below:

1.Library workshops/demonstrations 84%
2.Guided library tours 76%
3.Online virtual library tours 12%
4.Self-guided library tours 4%
5.Treasure hunts 0%

Workshops and Demonstrations

The top 3 topics of workshops/demonstrations offered were:

1.Showing students how to use the library catalogue 
2.Showing students how to accessing online resources 
3.An introduction to referencing 

Library Tours Attendance

•The responses to attendance for library tours range from “100%” to “not vast numbers” however overall the responses were very positive. 
•The tours that were timetabled or compulsory had a much higher turnout compared to the tours that rely on student’s initiative to attend these sessions. 
Frequency of Induction Sessions
•All the universities offer some form of induction at the start of the academic year
•In addition to at the start of the year some universities offer inductions at other times; in January and February for example 
•Most will provide sessions on request from lecturers

Alternative inductions

•20 out of 25 universities that replied to the survey do offer alternative form of inductions for students who are unable to attend inductions sessions. 
•Most of the alternative information provided for inductions was online
•For those who didn’t offer other forms of inductions there were hints in their responses that it was something they were considering for the future. 

Webpage/s designed for Inductions, User Education or Information Literacy

40% of universities surveyed have a designated webpage for inductions and they were mainly available via their own VLE. 

Tours

The results below show the various ways physical tours are offered to students, the highest via departments, schools and academics.

1.Timetables through department/Schools/Academics 72%
2.Drop In 24%
3.Sign Up 8 %
4.Other 8%

Only 16% of the universities surveyed include activities on tours. Here are some examples of activities offered:

•Short PowerPoint clicker session 
•Walking tour of reading rooms
•We offer live chat through livestream and Facebook chat
•In the past we have offered quizzes and library 'hunts'.
•Exercises on finding journals 
•Finding books - retrieve one from a list from the shelves 

Most universities cover the topics listed below on tours with Library and help and support coming out on top. 

Under ‘Other’ topics such as Archives and access to e-resources were mentioned.

2.Study Spaces 88%
3.Printing/Photocopying/Scanning 80%
4.PCs 76%
5.Library Catalogue 72%
6.Self Service 68%
7.Other 24%

Out of 25 only 6 universities indicated on the survey that they communicated with students before their course commences and they arrive at the library for the first time. Here are some of the examples of how they communicated with these students:

•Branded email 
•All our students get an email from us before they start each module
•This year we produced a welcome video available on the University's induction pages
•Promotional materials are provided through the 'Admissions Portal' and through physical mailings sent to forthcoming students.
•Through the VLE
•An introductory email is sent to all students during enrolment.

Promotions

•The Promotions for inductions according to the results of the survey are mainly through the departments and academics. Other sources to inform students are online such as VLE and social media, Twitter, Facebook etc. 
•Events such as Fresher’ Fair are utilised by having library stands and other traditional methods such as flyers, internal newsletters and posters.
