Dear Marianne

A belated thanks for this. Thank you for the link to the Leiden Manifesto. We can't govern how academic staff use metrics but we can point them in the right direction. I can pass on the information to our Planning Office and Research Office - I am not sure if they have a policy on how metrics is used in the institution.

Best wishes

Linda

Dear Linda

You should be extremely careful when using bibliometrics to analyze individual researchers. If you decide to use metrics my advice would be:

-	Find metrics which correspond with the qualifications stated in the job posting – for example high impact research, international network etc. (Often the h-index does not match any of these.) You will need a range of indicators. And it takes a lot of time to find the right indicators and to do bibliometric profiles for the individual candidates.

-	Do not choose candidates based on metrics, for example by setting a threshold which a specific indicator must meet.

-	Each applicant should be invited to comment on their own bibliometric profile.

See also the Leiden Manifesto where you find ten principles for how to work with bibliometrics in evaluations: http://www.nature.com/news/bibliometrics-the-leiden-manifesto-for-research-metrics-1.17351

Best wishes

Dear all

Many thanks for the information - it looks really clear.

The enquiry came via a colleague - we don't know why but possibly for evaluation of job candidates. If this is the case, which metrics would be better?

We don't have Incites, so Scopus is our sole source (I think).

Good answer to the technical question, but for me the real question is: WHY does this person want to know?? Personal vanity? Evaluation of job candidates? Going to enter collaborations?

Subject : Comparing the h-index of a known researcher with others in the field Hi

We have had a request from a member of staff as to how a known researcher's h-index/citations can be compared to other in the field. We have SciVal but I am a novice user. I found in the bench-marking module that you can create a group of researchers by name, or by subject keywords and I get an overall score. Is this the best way to do it? Any help gratefully received.

Best wishes

Good point! Mustn’t forget our Library Reference Interview skills… I was assuming the former or for some research evaluation exercise. However, depending on what they want to do with the information they might be better steered towards other metrics.

Subject: Suggestion for a visit?

Dear colleagues,

At the university library of the Erasmus University Rotterdam we are exploring practical ways to develop a research assessment / bibliometric service, as part of our research support services. It should be operational later this year.

As is the case with many other university libraries we don't have any bibliometric dedicated staff (although all of us should promote and support critical use of bibliometrics at their faculties), but some of us have years of experience in assisting researchers, research groups and research management officers in bibliometric analyses. We have also attended several courses by the CWTS in Leiden and the European Summerschool for Scientometrics. So I suppose you could call us experienced bibliometric practitioners.

I would be very interested in visiting academic libraries where such a service has already actually been established, to join them for one of more days, to see how it works in daily practice and whether it is considered to be successful or not. In this list I came across several academic libraries f.i. in the UK where bibliometricians are appointed or services are created, like in Manchester, Loughborough, Bath, Leicester, LSE, to name just a few (and of course Wageningen in my own country: the Netherlands). Probably we have met some of you at our special event "How to deal with unsettling realities of bibliometric services in universities" at the STI conference in September 2014 in Leiden. (See: http://www.slideshare.net/Wowter/special-unsettling-reality-2014-wg).

Who would be willing - and has the opportunity - to welcome me for a working visit of one of more days, somewhere between June and October of this year?

Thanks!
