Applications are invited for the position of Research Assistant/Postdoctoral Researcher in Statistical Modelling and Data Analytics at the Department of Mathematics & Statistics, University of Limerick, Ireland. (NOTE: appointment will be made at either Postdoctoral Researcher or Research Assistant level. To be appointed at Postdoctoral Researcher level, a PhD in Statistics, Computer Science or related discipline is essential.).
OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
Supported by an Enterprise Ireland Innovation Partnership Programme Award, this project will focus on the foundry value stream of the manufacturing process of artificial knees at DePuy (Ireland). During manufacture the product progresses through several production stages with final product inspection prior to advancement to the next value stream. If defects are detected the part will either be scrapped or re-worked before progressing to the next value stream.
While inherent variability and uncertainty of several process inputs are now measurable using state-of-the-art metrology, the impact of this on part porosity, dimensional stability and surface defects at the foundry has not yet been established. This research programme aims to use statistical-based data analytics to identify, understand and model relationship(s) between process parameters and product defects with a view to reducing scrap rates. It will develop data analytics algorithms and tools for understanding the relationship(s) between various process steps and part defects in the foundry value stream.
The successful candidate will primarily be based at DePuy (Ireland), Ringaskiddy, Co. Cork and will work closely with a multi-disciplinary team within the foundry. However, the successful candidate will also have close connections with MACSI (UL) and will leverage the knowledge and expertise of researchers within the MACSI group.
