Heatherwick studio is looking for a full-time Model Conservator to work in our studio based in King’s Cross. This is a new role and serves to support the Archivist with the cleaning, repair and conservation of architectural models within the studio’s archive. The successful applicant will also be required to oversee the process of logging, photographing and packaging new models made by the workshop.
You will need to have a good understanding and knowledge of materials, attention to detail and patience, as well as being a tenacious and problem-solving individual. To be successful in the role and support the Archivist, Archive Assistant and workshop team you will also demonstrate an ability to think strategically in relation to model conservation and cataloguing as the studio continues to grow.
The key responsibilities and essential skills and experience are detailed below:
Key responsibilities
• Working with the Archivist to identify archived models in need of cleaning, repair and re-packing
• Cleaning and repairing models, consulting the workshop team when required
• Assisting the Archivist and Archive Assistant with making protective covers for archived models
• Logging new models into the archive database as soon as they are completed by the workshop
• Working with the workshop and project teams to facilitate photography of all new models
• Ordering Perspex cases and flight cases for new models as required
• Condition-checking models when they return to the studio from client meetings
• Patrolling studio bays to monitor care of models and other material in current use
• Assisting the Archivist and Archive Assistant with planning towards models being stored off-site
• Supporting the Exhibitions team with the loaning of studio objects and materials for exhibition
• Supporting the Exhibitions team with condition-checking models on return from exhibitions
• Researching current thinking in relation to model preservation and conservation
• Promoting and communicating the aims and standards of the archive to studio members
Skills and Experience
• PC Literate in programmes such as Outlook, Microsoft office, InDesign, Photoshop and Access
• Experience of working with models
• Good general understanding of materials and their care and conservation requirements
• Experience of handling delicate objects
• Ability to prioritise and plan tasks and to work independently
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively over email and in person
