Visionaries: Thinking Through Female Filmmakers
Call for Book Proposals
I.B.Tauris is excited to announce a new book series, Visionaries: the first to be solely dedicated to female filmmakers, their work, influence and status. Featuring short, accessible books on individual female filmmakers from around the world, written by leading experts, Visionaries will explore the aesthetic, industrial and cultural questions that relate to female filmmakers. It will offer a forum for new debates about women, authorship and cinema.
Analysing their world views and formal styles, conceptual concerns, political perspectives and industrial realities, Visionaries will ‘think through’ female filmmakers. It will investigate what it means to be a female filmmaker, examine the films made by female filmmakers, and explore the different visions of the world these films present.
Books in this series will ask:
* Is the much-debated concept of auteurism applicable to female filmmakers?
* Is female authorship distinctive in its politics, aesthetics or industrial methods?
* Does it matter whether a filmmaker self-identifies as a female filmmaker, and if so how, in what cultural and industrial contexts?
* How does each filmmaker express her vision of the world in visual, sonic and spatial ways?
* What are the ethical and political concerns of female filmmakers and how do they influence their cinematic visions of the world?
* What are the cultural, national and industrial contexts within which female filmmakers work?
Visionaries will speak from an objective, analytical, lively and accessible standpoint that will combine detailed analysis of film style with cultural and industrial critique. This consistency of ethos across the series will ensure Visionaries makes a groundbreaking development to the field, reaches both a specialist and a general readership, and fills a space in the book market that is currently untapped.
