How to Write a Research Paper
"Most university courses involve
some sort of extended writing assignment,
usually in the form of a research paper.
Papers normally require that a
student identify a broad area of research
related to the course, focus the
topic through some general background
reading, identify a clear research
question, marshal primary and secondary
resources to answer the question,
and present the argument in a clear and
creative manner, with proper
citations.
That is the theory, at least. But how do
you go about doing it all? This
brief guide provides some answers."

Writing a Research Paper in Mathematics
"Good mathematical writing, like good mathematics thinking,
is a skill which must be practiced and developed for optimal performance.
The purpose of this paper is to provide assistance for young
mathematicians
writing their first paper. The aim is not only to aid in the development
of a well written paper, but also to help students begin to think
about mathematical writing.
I am greatly indebted to a wonderful booklet, "How to Write Mathematics,"
which provided much of the substance of this essay."

THE RESEARCH PAPER
"There is a standard format for all research reports, whether
they be of the natural or social sciences. The ultimate goal is
to test hypotheses, the predictions derived from one's theory
and built upon the findings of others.
The structure of the research paper reflects the profound
relationship between theory and fact. Facts do not speak for
themselves. As Marvin Harris (Cultural Materialism 1979:7)
observed, "facts are always unreliable without theories that
guide their collection and that distinguish between superficial
and significant appearances." On the other hand, theories
without facts are meaningless. The premise of science
(and what distinguishes it from dogma and armchair
philosophizing) is the authority of experiment and
observation over reason, ideology, and intuition."
http://www.trinity.edu/mkearl/research.html
"Also reflected in a research paper is the cumulative nature of
scientific knowledge. In the "Review of Literature" section one
reports on the findings of others relevant to one's own inquiry.
Your enterprise may be simply attempting to replicate others'
findings using a different population at a different point in time.
Or you may be addressing contradictory predictions derived from
two different theories, or noting inconsistencies in findings of
different researchers. In the "Discussion" section you will be
communicating to future investigators: what did you find and
where does one now go?
Finally, it's worth stressing that the evaluation of your paper will
never be determined by whether or not your hypotheses are
verified. It is important to remember that a hypothesis supported
by the data does not mean that it is true as there conceivably is
an infinite number of other theories that lead to the same prediction.
Similarly, failure of support does not necessarily mean that your
hypothesis is wrong: it may be hold true in some populations,
you may have incorrectly measured your theory's concepts,
your sampling may be flawed, etc. Philosopher Karl Popper, in fact,
argues that science is not a method for verifying hypotheses.
Instead, all that science can logically lead to is the falsification of
hypotheses. In sum, negative results can be every bit as important
as positive ones."

"American Psychological Association (APA) style is an academic
format specified in The Publication Manual of the
American Psychological Association, a style guide that offers
academic authors guidance on various subjects for the submission
of papers to the publications of APA.[1] The APA states that the
guidelines were developed to assist reading comprehension in
the social and behavioral sciences, for clarity of communication,
and for "word choice that best reduces bias in language".[2][3]
The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association
contains guidelines on many aspects of academic writing as it is
regarded as appropriate by the APA. Among the topics covered
are information on the structure of research papers of various kinds,
spelling rules, an author-date reference style, construction of tables
and graphs, plagiarism, formatting of papers, and much more.
APA style is widely used, either entirely or with modifications,
by hundreds of other scientific journals (including medical and
other public health journals), in many textbooks, and in academia
(for papers written in classes). Along with AMA style and CSE style,
it is one of the major style regimes for such work. Many publications
have small local style guides that cascade over AMA, APA, or CSE
style in a way analogous to how inline styles in HTML cascade over
CSS styles (for example, "follow APA style unless otherwise specified
herein" or "for issues not addressed herein, follow APA style")."

It contains, among other changes, a revised list of
accepted acronyms and new tips on word usage.
The world is not static. Nor is the language we
employ to assess it.
In dealing with foreign policy and national security,
]our government has many sources of insight on
which to draw. The depth of our knowledge, the
strength of our thinking, and the power of our
words will ensure that our customers, from
policymakers to operations officers, continue to
rely on the Directorate of Intelligence.

SKILL SET
"Why use two words when one will do? We already have a perfectly
good word in 'skills' (ending with an s, not a z)." Chip Lupo, Columbia,
S.C.
"A skill is a skill -- that is it. Phrases such as 'I have the skill set
to do that
properly' or anything resembling that phrase, shows the speaker is
seriously
lacking skills in the art of conversation. Please try this, 'I have the
skill...
do you have the skills... this requires certain skills... he is very
skilled...
that was a skillful maneuver... See? No need for a skill set."
