Glasgow Science Centre (GSC) are recruiting for a highly motivated and creative candidate to fill this new and exciting role of Planetarium Officer. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with a strong background and passion for astronomy to get involved in the creation and delivery of education and entertainment experiences for visitors to GSC’s full-dome digital Planetarium.
This role is permanent, full-time based on 37.5 hours per week on a salary of £19,316 - £21,995 per annum.
Key Duties include:
To assist in the research, acquisition and development of astronomy programmes, films and other science based programmes for a full-dome digital Planetarium.
To operate and present within one of GSC’s flagship areas, a high quality and varied planetarium programme for both public and education visitors to GSC’s 5 star standard to establish the planetarium as a world-class venue for astronomy education.
To be responsible for the day to day operation of the equipment within the digital planetarium.
To work with the Planetarium manager and AV/ICT Manager on the ongoing maintenance of the planetarium systems.
To assume the role of an “Engagement Champion” by leading by example, motivating and mentoring a team of Planetarium Presenters and being a role model in Science Communication, specifically within a planetarium environment.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience required include:
• Confident with excellent interpersonal and communication skills - essential.
• Degree level qualification in astronomy or equivalent relevant experience – essential.
• Good working knowledge of a fixed-dome planetarium – essential.
• Experience of dealing with the public, community groups and school children – desirable.
• Good presentation skills with ability to present to large groups/ audiences – desirable.
