For what it's worth, I think of CreativeWork as equivalent to 'artefact', ie any object shaped by people. This doesn't include natural history objects but it does cover almost anything else.
There's a handy Google page for testing your schema markup which I'd recommend to anyone trying it out. That and other information is linked from https://developers.google.com/structured-data/
