Hi Mike,
Are you looking to come up with a set of properties/classes needed for museums, or is this about implementing existing schema.org <http://schema.org/>?
At the moment schema.org <http://schema.org/> lacks a general ‘object’ type. It does have more specific types - for example:
CreativeWork
Sculpture
Painting
VisualArtwork
VisualArtwork has quite a broad definition and may cover many types of object.
Some stuff might also be handled as a Product, as this allows you to specify types (e.g. Toy as Product etc.)
However it seems pretty clear that there will be a large number of things that are neither Products nor CreativeWorks. Possibly you could use Thing which is the most general type in schema.org
Depends how super simple you want it, but some ideas of some schema.org <http://schema.org/> properties that might be relevant (but not all relevant to all classes):
name
Creator
Contributor
thumbnailUrl
description
image
artMedium
artForm
depth
height
