Hi Gill
I would recommend using file upload for any questions over 2-3 paragraphs. We recently ran a 130 seat exam in formal exam conditions. Bb test contained 5+ random questions. Students copied question into word document, used all the feature of word and then saved the file. These were then submitted by the students to blackboard's assignment tool prior to a deadline. The bonus of this is the marking tools in the assignment tool are easier for academics. No problems were reported

Subject: Blackboard tests essay question type
Afternoon all
Has anyone used the essay question type in a Blackboard test? We currently support a large number of high stakes exams run as Bb tests (predominantly MCQ, but also making use of the majority of other available question types to different extents), but we've yet to trial essay questions. Is there a backup/automatic save while the student is working on an essay question? We are concerned about resilience if there were computer/network problems that interrupted a student's attempt. Would be interested to hear the experiences of anyone who has tried this.
Thank you in advance
Rebecca

Hello Rebecca
At the Blackboard TLC there was a presentation by Groningen University on how they were using Blackboard for high stakes assessment, possibly your account manager could put you in contact with someone there who could tell you about their experiences?
