Thanks for all the contributions so far. I've collated them as follows:
Braithwaite’s To Sir with Love
Beryl Gilroy's Black Teacher: an autobiography, 1976, reprinted 1991/1994
Trevor Carter’s Shattering Illusions, 1987
Darrell M. Newton, Ph.D’s critique of David Oyelowo's role in Shoot the Messenger.
Lenny Henry played a headteacher in a series about a comprehensive school in the 1980s
The Channel 4 series ‘Teachers’ had teachers played by Navin Chowdhry and Nina Sosanya.
Angela Griffin’s character in the early BBC series of ‘Waterloo Road.’ Later series had teachers played by Shabana Bakhsh and Vinette Robinson.
BBC3’s series ‘Bad Education’ had a headteacher played by Michelle Gomez.
Grange Hill’s Deputy head/ headteacher played by Cathy Tyson. 2008
I'm really looking for studies that critique films/TV dramas, rather than books (unless the book has been dramatised of course).
I'm finding more studies of white 'hero' teachers who 'rescue' black kids - so it will make an interesting contrast when I do come across actual studies.
Cheers

I don’t know of studies, but here are cases I recollect of teachers played by Black actors on UK TV.
Lenny Henry played a headteacher in a series about a comprehensive school in the 1980s: I don’t remember its name.
The Channel 4 series ‘Teachers’ had teachers played by Navin Chowdhry and Nina Sosanya.
A central character in the early series of ‘Waterloo Road’ on BBC was played by Angela Griffin. Later series had teachers played by Shabana Bakhsh and Vinette Robinson.
The recent BBC3 series ‘Bad Education’ had a headteacher played by Michelle Gomez.

In dramas? No.
Have you read Beryl Gilroy's Black Teacher (1976)?
And in his Shattering Illusions, Tevor Carter mentions teaching.

Subject: Representation of black teachers in UK dramas
Has anyone come across any studies of the representation of black teachers in UK dramas?
The subject occurred to me re. Cathy Tyson's 2008 role as Deputy/head teacher in Grange Hill.
An internet search proved fruitless.
cheers
