Project title: Effective use of information in patient safety and quality improvement
This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated, self-directed individual with a postgraduate degree (MSc or equivalent for appointment as Research Assistant, PhD or equivalent for appointment as Research Associate) in epidemiology, statistics, health services research, public health or a related numerate subject to carry out patient safety and quality improvement research within a leading and internationally renowned group. The available post sits within the Patient Safety Translational Research Centre (PSTRC). You will work on “Research Theme 1: Effective use of information” developing safety indicators for primary and integrated care as well as methods to identify quality and safety issues within patient pathways using routinely collected hospital episode statistics and GP consultation data.
This relatively new research field provides plenty of scope for original, high profile research and career development as a health services researcher. You will be supported by experts at the Dr Foster Unit, PSTRC, Imperial College London and external collaborators. We expect the post holder to participate fully in research activities, including publication in peer-reviewed journals and representation of the Unit and PSTRC at meetings, seminars and international conferences. Experience in using SAS is preferable, although training will be provided as necessary. We are strongly committed to personal and professional development.
The post holder will be based at the Dr Foster Unit, School of Public Health, Imperial College London, 3 Dorset Rise, London, EC4Y 8EN. They will join a small team led by Professor Paul Aylin, Chair in Epidemiology and Public Health, who is the PSTRC Research Theme 1 lead. The Patient Safety Translational Research Centre is one of only two in the country and led by Professor Ara Darzi. The Centre focuses on improving patient safety and the quality of health services, with an emphasis on translational research for patient care and consists of a strong multidisciplinary team from a range of clinical and scientific fields, including medicine, surgery, psychology, pharmacy and economics.
