Metrics and impact measurement are becoming an increasingly important part of the journals publishing landscape. Altmetrics that look beyond citations as a way of measuring impact are growing in importance and this course provides the background to understanding what they are and the issues around their use. This course has a primary focus on citation metrics, such as the Impact Factor, and their analysis. It also covers usage information and its use as a metric. It includes break-out sessions offering extensive hands-on use of the main citation databases - illustrating the types of analysis which can be derived from these data sources. The final session of the day debates the future of metrics.
