Better World Books works with libraries, literacy charities, student groups and sustainability officers to keep books out of landfill and support people in the UK and around the world with literacy and learning. Since the company was founded in the US in 2003, it has gone on to reuse or recycle 153 million books, donate over 15 million books, and raise almost £13 million for literacy and libraries. This unique business model has a positive social impact whilst also promoting sustainable development.
Vanessa Jones is a Chartered Librarian working as an Acquisitions Representative for Better World Books UK. She will be talking about how the company works as a socially minded business and describe some of the international projects which the company’s literacy partners are involved in: READ International is setting up youth-led libraries in Tanzania, for instance; whilst Room to Read runs a girls' education program in Asian and African countries to ensure girls complete their secondary education and learn the skills to negotiate key life decisions. Better World Books also works with Literacy Partners in the UK and Ireland: The National Literacy Trust; The National Adult Literacy Agency in Ireland; and the Scottish Book Trust.
Vanessa will also be talking about the Literacy and Education in Action Programme (LEAP) Grants whose aim is to support literacy projects that are being run by libraries and nonprofit organisations. For more information please go to www.betterworldbooks.co.uk.
ILIG Informals are not lectures; they are informal, but informative, early evening meetings with a short talk on a theme of international interest plus plenty of time for questions and networking. They are open to all and absolutely free. Light refreshments (nibbles and wine) are served which is why we ask you to let ILIG know you are coming by booking online at http://tinyurl.com/ILIGinformalBetterWorldBooks by no later than May 11 2015.
