Hi Daryl,
Thanks for sharing - sounds very similar to our experience - we ordered
the journal back in December but as I hadn't heard anything by February
I followed it up to be told that I had been sent an invoice (I hadn't).
So they sent me one and I passed it to our accounts who sent them a
cheque which they couldn't find. Even after the cheque was presented at
a bank they still said they hadn't received it and refused us access.
Eventually they traced it (though how a cheque for that much money gets
mislaid I don't know) and allowed us access, and agreed to let us have
an extension on our subscription (though even that took three attempts
to get the date right). They added the wrong name to the list of
institutions, then the right name, then it changed back to the wrong
name again.
I'm currently in touch with OCLC to see if there is a way get
article-level links to work. The RCN haven't been much help on this so
far.
Needless to say, I'm very unlikely to renew next year as it's likely
that none of our users will be able to benefit from our subscription
(thought I'm yet to try and work out how to get usage stats).
Kind regards,
Jason.

Hi Jason
We too have been getting the run around from RCN. We ordered the titles
at the start of the year and were sent a pro forma invoice from Turpin
Distribution for RCNi. I explained we don't pay in advance - they said
they don't give access without payment and we went around in circles for
a while. After a lot of explanation this end we got the pro forma
cleared for payment. 2 days later I got an email from someone at RCNi
Accounts asking if I'd like an invoice!
The thing is I still don't have access to the journals, which they've
been paid for.
I have just phoned RCNi Accounts who say I have to speak to Turpin
Distribution. It's like ground hog day.
I explained to the nice person in accounts that their service left much
to be desired and this may well be reflected when it comes to renewal
time. I explained too as librarians we do talk to each other, and I am
not alone in my opinion.
I have been thanked for my feedback and asked to put it in an email.
I wouldn't like to deprive others of giving their feedback so here's the
address:

Just off now to phone Turpin....

Subject: Nursing Standard
Hello all,
This is partly a rant, and partly an attempt to see if anyone else has
managed to do this....
We started a subscription to Nursing Standard via the RCN for January
2015 (we've only got access in the last three weeks, but that's a whole
other story) and I've been trying to add it to the NHS link resolver
(OCLC WorldShare).
It adds it okay (using the entry for RCN Publishing), but it lacks the
facility to link directly to the article from HDAS (apologies non-NHS
people!), only linking to the home page. I have asked the RCN for
advice, and they have given a less than helpful list of ways to link to
different bits of the journal (a table of contents, an individual
article by DOI) but no help in getting the Nursing Standard to work
properly in the link resolver.
It's annoying because it worked fine under CINAHL with Full-Text and
ProQuest, but of course the latest content it is no longer available by
any other route than via the RCN since they wanted "to give our users
the best possible experience".
If anyone has found the magic formula to make article-level links work,
I'd be very, very grateful! (chocolate can be supplied).
Have a good weekend,
Jason.
