Dear colleagues,
this is a reminder for our event on 12 May, titled:
Fifty Years of German-Israeli Relations: Reflections on History, Memory and International Politics
The event will take place at the Institute for German Studies, Birmingham University.
Please note that registration is essential. RSVP by 5 May to [log in to unmask]
The year 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the first exchange of ambassadors between the Federal Republic of Germany and the State of Israel. Despite protests in Israel and several Arab countries, and some criticism from Bonn, the two countries established official diplomatic relations in 1965. This was a crucial turning point in the history of transnational reconciliation, deserving our attention today for both its historical complexity and its contemporary relevance. The broader significance of the history of German-Jewish-Israeli relations in the aftermath of the Holocaust will be illuminated in the panel discussion.
While being hosted at the University of Birmingham, this event aims to reach beyond the traditional academic audience. While two of the speakers are UK-based academics, the other two are former members of the German and Israeli diplomatic establishment. The former German ambassador to Israel Harald Kindermann will present the audience with a German perspective on the five decades of diplomatic relations. This will be followed by the presentation of an Israeli perspective, as formulated by the former Israeli ambassador to Germany Shimon Stein. Ruth Wittlinger’s presentation (School of Government and International Affairs, Durham University) will focus on the state of the bilateral relationship in 2015 and provide the audience with an overview of German-Israeli relations under Angela Merkel’s Chancellorship. Lorena De Vita (PhD candidate, Department of International Politics, Aberystwyth University) will conclude the roundtable discussion by reflecting on the events of May 1965, and situating the origins of German-Israeli relations within the Cold War context in which they developed.
The discussion will be chaired by the Director of the Institute for German Studies, Nick Martin, and followed by a wine reception.
