Refugee Studies Centre International Summer School in Forced Migration

Applications are invited for the 2015 International Summer School in Forced Migration. Now in its 26th year, the Summer School offers an intensive, interdisciplinary and participative approach to the study of forced migration. It aims to enable people working with refugees and other forced migrants to reflect critically on the forces and institutions that dominate the world of the displaced.
Please note: Last year's course was heavily oversubscribed, so we encourage you to apply as soon as you can in order to avoid disappointment.

Course announcements
We are pleased to confirm that Professor Elspeth Guild will give a lecture as part of the course module on smuggling and access to asylum. Professor Guild is Jean Monnet Professor ad personam at Queen Mary University of London and at Radboud University Nijmegen, and a partner at the London law firm Kingsley Napley. She is an expert in EU law on immigration, asylum and border controls.
We are also happy to confirm that Dr David Cantor will give a guest lecture on Internally Displaced Persons as part of the course. Dr Cantor is Director and founder of the Refugee Law Initiative and a Reader in Human Rights Law at the School of Advanced Study, University of London. He is also an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Future Research Leader and the Editor-in-Chief of the ‘International Refugee Law’ book series published by Martinus Nijhoff.
Summer School participants spend a significant amount of time in small tutor groups on the course. We are delighted to announce yet another year of excellent tutors for 2015. Joining this year's Summer School as a tutor is Dr Jeff Crisp. Dr Crisp has served as Head of Policy Development and Evaluation at UNHCR, as Director of Policy and Research in the Global Commission on International Migration (GCIM) and as Senior Director for Policy and Advocacy with Refugees International. He has first-hand experience of humanitarian programmes and UN operations in more than 60 countries throughout the world and has published and lectured extensively on refugee, migration and humanitarian issues. He has a PhD in African Studies from the University of Birmingham.
Returning to the Summer School having previously tutored are Dr Cathryn Costello, Professor Matthew Gibney, Dr Maryanne Loughry, Ms Liesbeth Schockaert and Dr Tom Scott-Smith.

We have provisional confirmation that Mr Filippo Grandi will give the endnote lecture at this year’s Summer School. Mr Grandi is an Italian diplomat with extensive experience in United Nations humanitarian operations. From 2010-2014, he was Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

Course structure
Over three weeks, the course looks at the complex phenomenon of forced migration from a number of different angles. Mandatory core modules normally include:
• Conceptualising Forced Migration
• The globalisation of forced migration
• Asylum policy and international refugee law
• Negotiating institutional responses
• Internally Displaced Persons
Three optional modules for 2015 (participants choose one) are likely to include:
• Human smuggling: legal, political and ethical perspectives
• Palestinian refugees and international law
• Psychosocial support for forced migrants
