Subject: Re: [CIG-E-FORUM] Routes into Rare Books Cataloguing
I would like to just pick up on Anna Vlasova's question about binding description. Over the past four years I have been building on the work of a previous librarian in cataloguing Longleat's collections from scratch. In terms of binding description, I was heavily influenced therefore by the precedents already set in the existing catalogue. I therefore include the following information in what I regard as a fairly full description, where appropriate.
Date
Material
Colour
Tooling (blind, gilt, stamps, rolls, fillets, etc.) Spine label with text of any lettering transcribed Decoration of textblock (marbled, sprinkled, etc.) Decoration of pastedowns Markers and fore-edge tabs.
'Furniture' etc.
Notes on any obvious repairs (eg. rebacks)
Think that's it.
