Friday 8th May, 9.30am-5pm 'Uncertain Futures in Health and Illness.'
Management Building Lecture Theatre, Moore Building, Royal Holloway, University of London
Postgraduate students and early career researchers are invited to this one day symposium exploring the concepts of uncertainty and uncertain futures with regard to health and illness experiences.
This symposium will include a stimulating plenary panel discussing uncertain futures, as well as a chance to meet with and listen to fellow students and researchers working in similar areas.
Speakers:
Dr. Sarah Earthy, University of Surrey
Dr. Rebecca Dimond, Cardiff University
Sophie Rees, University of Warwick
Dr. Sarah Moore, University of Bath
Keynote Speaker:
Dr. Fadhila Mazanderani, University of Edinburgh
Abstract:
The concepts of uncertainty and uncertain futures have received some attention within medical sociology, but have often been overshadowed by the more dominant emphasis on the concept of risk. Experiences of uncertainties and how they are managed lay at the heart of questions which seek to better understand health and illness behaviours. How people imagine and plan for uncertain futures are important concerns for sociologists, and there is an ongoing need for further empirical and theoretical developments in this area.
Delegate Rates:
BSA Members £10, Non-Members £25 (Lunch will be provided). The number of available places is limited.
