The Combustion Research Facility at Sandia National Laboratories, Livermore California has openings for several postdoctoral associates in the Combustion Chemistry department.

Three such positions are described in more detail below. One position (648606) is to perform fundamental experiments in chemical dynamics, using crossed molecular beam techniques and laser spectroscopy; one (648566) is to carry out experiments in chemical kinetics relevant to the chemistry of combustion, employing laser spectroscopic methods to probe chemical reactions; a third (647375) is to perform research in theoretical chemistry and theoretical chemical kinetics, working to develop, validate, and apply new theoretical methods and codes to the fundamental chemistry of combustion.
General information relevant to all three positions is given at the end of this message. All positions are at the Livermore, California site, and do not require a Department of Energy security clearance.

How To Apply
Apply via http://www.sandia.gov/careers/students_postdocs/postdocs.html
Application procedure
•	Use Sandia's Careers tool to create a username and password.
•	Enter "postdoctoral" into the Keywords text field, and click Search. (You can also conduct a targeted search with the particular job number)
•	Browse the list of postdoc openings.
•	Complete an online application for a specific postdoc opening.

Position 648606 Chemical Reaction Dynamics
Primary Job Duties
A postdoctoral fellowship is available in the laboratory of Dr. David W. Chandler at Sandia National Laboratory in Livermore CA. The research would be focused on understanding the basic chemistry and energy transfer dynamics associated with combustion. Crossed molecular beam techniques combined with Velocity Mapped Ion Imaging techniques are widely used in the laboratory to study such things as collision-induced dissociation of molecules, rotational energy transfer of electronically excited molecules, unimolecular dissociation dynamics and bimolecular reactions. Recent studies focus upon state-selected energy transfer and comparison to theory. In addition, development of new multiplexed, time-resolved, optical diagnostic techniques is underway.

Required
A PhD in a relevant discipline (conferred within the past five years).
Experience with laser spectroscopy, molecular beam scattering, and/or other areas of fundamental experimental gas phase chemical physics. Knowledge of fundamental aspects of collision physics, chemical reactions and/or molecular spectroscopy.

Desired
Strong publication record, excellent communication skills, experience with computer programming, and innovative thinking

Position 648566 Experimental Combustion Chemistry and Chemical Kinetics
Primary Job Duties
The postdoctoral associate will be responsible for designing and implementing novel experiments to probe key autoignition reactions from elementary steps to submechanisms, under the direction of staff scientists in the Combustion Chemistry Department in the Combustion Research Facility of Sandia National Laboratories. The postdoctoral associate is also expected to interact strongly with related ongoing computational kinetics and modeling efforts in the department and with external collaborators.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Chemistry, mechanical engineering, physics, or related field, with emphasis on chemical reaction kinetics or dynamics strongly preferred.

Required
A PhD in a relevant discipline (conferred within the past five years)
Candidate must have substantial expertise in at least one of the following areas: chemical
kinetics, laser spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, or photoionization detection of chemical species. Must have high scientific ability demonstrated by a strong publication record and have good
presentation and communication skills. Ability to collaborate in an interdisciplinary multiple-
institution team is required.

Desired
Familiarity with high-resolution laser spectroscopy is highly desirable. Knowledge of high-pressure (> 50 bar) chemical kinetics experiments, experience with master equation modeling of chemical reactions, and knowledge of combustion or atmospheric oxidation chemistry are desired.

Position 647375 Theoretical Chemistry
Primary Job Duties
The Combustion Research Facility's Chemistry Department has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral position in the field of theoretical chemistry and/or theoretical chemical kinetics. The primary task of the postdoc will be to work with Ahren Jasper (sandia.gov/~ajasper) and other CRF scientists in the development, validation, and application of new theoretical methods and codes for characterizing the detailed chemistry of combustion. Areas of active research include: nonadiabatic dynamics and kinetics, direct transition state theory calculations, predicting vibrational anharmonicity at high internal energies, trajectory simulations of collisional energy transfer, master equation development, and potential surface development. This position is funded by the Department of Energy's Basic Energy Sciences program.

Required
A Ph.D. in chemistry, physics, or a closely related field, with an emphasis on theoretical physical chemistry is required. The candidate must have scientific programming experience and a substantial interest in code development.

Desired
A good understanding of gas-phase chemical kinetics and/or dynamics, experience with parallel programming, and familiarity with popular chemical kinetics, electronic structure, and/or chemical modeling codes is desired.

Department Description
The Combustion Chemistry and Diagnostics Department is part of Sandia's Combustion Research Facility (CRF) in Livermore, California, where over 100 scientists, engineers, and technologists conduct basic and applied research to improve our nation's ability to use and control combustion processes efficiently and cleanly. Under the principal sponsorship of the Department of Energy's Office of Basic Energy Sciences, the Combustion Chemistry and Diagnostics Department conducts fundamental experimental, theoretical, and modeling research to develop a foundational understanding of the key chemical processes that underlie the complex mechanisms of combustion. Additional programs investigate the effects of combustion emissions on atmospheric composition and climate. Research areas include chemical dynamics and spectroscopy, theoretical and experimental chemical kinetics, flame chemistry and modeling, and gas-phase and particulate diagnostics development and deployment.

Job Summary
The Post-Doctoral Appointee Program is designed to recruit outstanding Ph.D. applicants to assist a line organization in meeting its mission objectives and to provide a professional technical work environment for the employee. The Ph.D. must have been conferred within one to five years prior to employment. These assignments are for a one-year period, with the option at management's discretion to serve no more than five additional one-year assignments. Extensions of up to six years require employee's manager approval.

Security Clearance
No clearance required.

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to the work site. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment.

If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require a DOE-granted security clearance, a pre-processing background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for DOE-granted security clearances must be U.S. citizens and be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate DOE security clearance as required for the position.

Benefits
At Sandia you will receive many benefits as a valued employee of a premier national multi-program engineering and science research laboratory. In our Total Rewards package you will enjoy competitive pay, great benefits, a stimulating, positive environment and learning opportunities that will help build your career. More information may be found on our Careers website.
