medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear George,
I'm not aware of any examples quite that early, but they do begin to crop up by the 1330s, in the Pisa Camposanto Last Judgement, at least as far as "anti-popes" are concerned. See Joseph Polzer, "Aristotle, Mohammed and Nicholas V in Hell," Art Bulletin, vol. 46, no. 4 (Dec. 1964), 457-69 (available on JStor), who discusses Dante.
Cheers,
Jim

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear medieval-religion colleagues,
Yet again, a student has asked a question for which I have no answer: up to around the time of Dante (d.1321), would there have been paintings or other images depicting popes — or bishops, or other clergy for that matter, but especially popes — in Hell? There are some depictions of Dante’s Inferno that show this, of course, but the question is whether people could have seen such images before having read, or been told about, Dante’s literary creation.
Many thanks for your help!
Best wishes, George
