Hi Tamara,
As it happens we are running on OSCE familiarisation activity next Thursday! Students will be working in small groups with simulated patients (SPs) at different stations. It is being coordinated by a colleague who is a clinical academic. I will let you know more after the event next week.
Best wishes,
Robyn

Hi Robyn,
We work with students across our university including the School of Dental Science. I'm curious what support you provide for students undertaking OSCEs and other oral-type exams. I've been asked by students if we could add an exam preparation workshop on this topic.
Kind regards,
Tamara

Hello again everyone,
I am feeling very heartened by the response to my post yesterday; I was delighted that there was so much interest in sharing practice! I am looking forward to discussing some of the issues our students face, and how we work to support them. I thought I'd start by sharing a little about our work.
Many of our efforts are focussed on embedding study skills in the first year, and then continuing to provide one to one and group support for students on the Dentistry, Dental Technology and Dental Hygiene and Therapy programmes. This is offered through our 'Denstudy' advice service. Whilst Denstudy does not have a physical base, it is a 'brand' that is regularly marketed and well-recognised by our students. We make sure that our marketing states that we are specifically for Dentistry, so that students see the personal relevance of our service. We have lots of straplines like "Make your writing sparkle" and "Brush up your revision skills" coupled with toothbrush and toothpaste cartoon images! The vast majority of our students access Denstudy in their first year.
Last year we piloted a series of 'Bite-Sized workshops'. Topics included assignment planning, reading, memory techniques and revision. These were well received, and the revision sessions attracted the highest attendance. Of note, these 'quick 20 minute sessions for busy students' were designed to take account of the significant time pressures our students face with their academic and clinical workloads, and they were run at lunchtime in a teaching room directly outside the lecture theatre and café, with free tea and coffee on offer.
Our remit is broad. We teach many 'non-dental' aspects of the curriculum, such as communication skills, psychology, teamwork and management, and are involved in a range of other departmental activities, such as open days, widening participation, multiple mini interviews (MMIs), and objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs). We also provide pastoral support and support for our international students.
At the moment we are exploring how we can enhance our support through the implementation of peer support at two 'flash points' in the dentistry programme: (1) during the transition to the programme in 1st year, and (2) during 4th year, when students are approaching their final year projects and preparing for their Dental Foundation Training interviews.
I'd be fascinated to know what types of support are provided in other clinical programmes at various 'flash points', particularly in terms of 'way in' (first year transition) and 'way out' (final year projects, interview preparation).
Best wishes,
Robyn

Dear Robyn
Apologies if you're already aware of this - but there is a University network called Leeds Enhancing Education Practice (LEEP), see http://www.sddu.leeds.ac.uk/learning-teaching/networks/leeds-enhancing-educational-practice-network-leep/ which is a great forum and opportunity to share ideas/practice across the Uni.
Just a thought in case you hadn't see it.
Best wishes

Hi Robyn, I think we met at the Leeds supporting students conference in 2013 (and found we had loads in common in terms of our experience of supporting students) - we would LOVE to work with you guys :-) Rachel p.s. John Sandars has been here today - helping us support students better - you must be telepathic!
