In Happisburgh church graveyard there is a mass grave for 119 souls lost from HMS Invincible off the Norfolk coast in 1801.
Only discovered by chance in 1988.
Okay, that’s not pre-19th century, but it’s pretty close and if there is a shortage of examples …...

Subject: Query on pre 19th century burial of drowned sailors
Dear all,
We have been dealing with a query on pre-19th century burials of drowned sailors and having exhausted the NHLE and NRHE for examples we wondered if HERs may be able to help. The query has come from Prof Dr Jurgen Hasse at the University of Frankfurt.
Prof Dr Hasse is looking for examples of pre-19th century burials of those drowned at sea to understand more about the burial practice. There are 3 methods which were regularly employed:-
1) Burial in the northern corner of local cemeteries
2) Outside the local cemetery, sometimes with a little grave cross
3) Burial near where the body was recovered without any mark.
Depending on the numbers of bodies recovered remains were sometimes interred in mass graves.
Have you any examples of these or any other types of pre-19th century ‘drowned at sea’ burials in your HER? Do you have any records of memorials to pre-19th century wreck events in your HER? Do you know of any sources of information that might assist Prof Dr Hasse in his research?
Please reply either on or off list and we will pass on any useful information.
Thanks
Sarah
