Clinical Research Fellow for the National Bowel Cancer Audit
Clinical Effectiveness Unit
The Royal College of Surgeons of England - London School of Hygiene and
Tropical Medicine
Central London
The National Bowel Cancer Audit evaluates the quality of care received
by patients with Bowel cancer in England and Wales. Its aim is to assess
the organisation of cancer services as well as the diagnosis and staging
process and the outcomes of treatment.
For this Audit, we are seeking an enthusiastic clinical fellow who will
be part of a multidisciplinary team. You will support the further
development of the Audit, the assessment of data quality, data analysis,
and reporting of its findings and policy implications. You will be
expected to use your work as the basis for an MD/PhD thesis.
The Audit has until now focused primarily on bowel cancer patients who
are treated surgically. You will help to widen the scope of the Audit
(including all bowel cancer patients, not only those treated surgically)
and to extent its time horizon (assessing long-term patient outcomes up
to five years after diagnosis)
The post will be based in The Clinical Effectiveness Unit, a joint unit
of The Royal College of Surgeons of England and The London School of
Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Its remit is to carry out national
audits, develop audit methodologies and produce evidence on clinical and
cost-effectiveness of surgical procedures.
The Audit is funded by the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership.
It is carried out by the Clinical Effectiveness Unit in partnership with
the Association of Coloproctologists of Great Britain and Ireland, and
the NHS Health and Social Care Information Centre.
You should have clinical experience in a relevant discipline (surgery,
gastroenterology, oncology) and have passed a Membership/Fellowship exam
of a relevant Royal College. Excellent verbal and written communication
skills and good organisational abilities are essential. Research
experience is an advantage.
Informal enquiries regarding this post should be directed to Dr Kate
Walker, Lecturer in Medical Statistics ([log in to unmask]); Mr
Nigel Scott, Colorectal Surgeon ([log in to unmask]); or Professor
Jan van der Meulen, Professor in Clinical Epidemiology
([log in to unmask]).
The post is offered full-time for three years. Salary will be between
£33,597 and £40,118, depending on qualifications and experience.
