This was an unprecedented use of external agencies to spy on staffs' private emails, SMS messages and Facebook postings. Of course, the irony is that it all took place at the height of the 'hacking' scandal perpetrated by the national newspapers against 'celebrities', some of whom have now received substantial compensation.
