The Film, Sound & Photography Section (FSPS) of the Archives and Records Association is pleased to announce a FREE training event on Tuesday 24th March 2015, held in the Huntley Room at London Metropolitan Archives (LMA) - www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/lma
The Value of Archival Film: Content, Storage and Preservation will feature two presentations. The first by Caroline de Stefani (Conservation Manager at LMA), who will discuss the right handling and preservation techniques to employ when working with archival film as well as outline the potential threats and signs of degradation to monitor. Using practical examples, Caroline will provide sound advice for those working with both small and large film collections.
The second presentation, by David Baldwin (City Archivist at LMA), will introduce the Inner London Education Authority (ILEA) film collection. A rich source of social, educational and visual history, this series of programmes was initially aimed at pupils in primary, secondary and further education, and with original footage shot during the 1960s/70s affords a rare glimpse of the changing architecture, fashions and communities of old London. Using clips from a selection of film, David will also explore the work involved in digitising part of the collection i.e. planning, transfer and storage.
This event is for archivists interested in learning more about the preservation, digitisation and often unexpected value of film archives. The aim is to inspire as much as to educate, and archivists of all levels and experience should find something rewarding from its content.
The programme for the event is as follows:
17.00-17.30 Welcome and networking
17.30-18.00 Presentation (Caroline de Stefani, LMA Conservation Manager)
18.00-18.45 Presentation (David Baldwin, City Archivist)
18.45-19:00 Q&A
19.00 End
Places for this event are limited, so if you’d like to attend please book directly via Eventbrite - http://ow.ly/JuHjW
