We are seeking applications for a 2-year Postdoctoral research associate to work on the RIVM project "Model-based source tracing of foodborne disease outbreaks".
Job description
During widespread foodborne disease outbreaks, the causative product is often notoriously difficult to identify. A typical example is the EHEC outbreak in Germany in 2011. During the outbreak, two tasks must be achieved as quickly as possible: identify the contaminated product and find out where it was contaminated. Currently, there is however no general procedure for source tracing, whereas a transparent procedure is crucial for earlier and more effective disease containment.
The job will involve the development of novel methods for both the identification of the contaminated food product and its origin using statistical modelling and network theory. You develop Bayesian procedures to combine evidence from different information sources, like questionnaires, historical data and molecular typing data. Information is usually delayed, fragmented, incomplete and uncertain and is continuously updated. You use this evidence to confirm or falsify hypotheses.
You develop scripts in open source software, publish your results in international peer-reviewed journals, and present your work at international scientific conferences. The job will include a research stay at the University of Stockholm and/or University of Leuven. Your work will enable the RIVM to be better prepared for large, potentially dangerous, outbreaks.
Conditions of employment
The remuneration is maximized at € 3.852,- based on a full employment contract, excluding 8% holiday allowance per year and 8.3% end of year allowance. Additional terms of employment are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) of the Dutch Government.
