sDear Keith, Johann, David and all,
For a long time, I would have enthusiastically agreed with David, Johann and
Keith's position and claim for art and human artistic abilities.
In those times, it seemed to me creativity, intuition, art, poetry, music,
awareness and wonderful solutions emerging from the subconscious were THE
way of addressing issues that were too complex or too difficult to
straightforwardly address with thinking and logic.
Not only that, such a position felt right in my bones, especially when I
was involved.
Then, over a space of a few years, it became obvious to me our subconscious
artistic intuitive abilities are physically and biologically limited in what
they are capable, and not in any sense infinite.
The assumption of infinite power and ability for creativity, intuition,
art, metaphors, poetry and the like and other subconscious abilities is,
however, what is required to justify claims that these special artistic
human abilities can generate from deep inside us solutions for complex
situations. If such artistic abilities are limited, then rather than claims
of infinite power over complexity, the appropriate questions to ask are 'How
much are they limited?' and 'In what ways?'.
This understanding leaves me in the position of saying "just a minute,
there" rather than "hear, hear" .
My limited exploration of answering these questions led me to the 2 Feedback
loop hypothesis. This is the indication that we as humans cannot address
situations whose behaviour is shaped by more than 2 feedback loops. This
limitation seems to apply to artistic, intuitive and subconscious activities
as much as conscious cognitive activities. Its existence suggests there are
many other boundaries and limits of our intuitive, artistic, subconscious
abilities.
The existence of such limitations challenges the assumption that art,
intuition, poetry, metaphor or the like can provide understanding or
solutions to complex situations.
It means, I find myself not only saying "just a minute, there" but also "can
you prove to me the claim for art, poetry, intuition, creativity and
metaphor is true".
It leads me to asking 'Where is the proof that people who are sensitive
enough can make 'sense of it all', and that that sense is accurate?'
My findings so far suggest the claims for creativity, intuition, art,
metaphors, poetry and the like are perhaps more than a little over-egged.
I'm as interested as anyone in finding out that perhaps our subconscious,
intuitive and artistic abilities are in fact infinite in respect to
understanding all and any complex situations.
It would be interesting to find others' evidence, either way.
Best wishes,
Terry

Sorry,
"Here here" is a shout of support and acclaim. So it means here "yes, yes I
agree completely.

Does "here here!" mean "just a minute, there", or "'allo, 'allo, what's this

Or, does it mean ... that you "hear" something in my response that agrees
with your comment "we are trapped in the land of poets and poets are best

I would agree that "it" ... "is a way of being that few can sustain" ...
with "it" meaning the way any person is willing or unwilling to adapt to
what is being received (fed back) from the environment within which that
person has to operate .. aka known as "living".
Metaphors and "big pictures" are all part of the same thing ... all
reverberate back from the "future" towards which it was projected (synonym
for "design" ... or, like the sonar in a submarine, collectively create a
proto-picture of what could be possible), and then what? As David said,
this is still not reality, but then neither is much of what we have to live
through ...
... it could be that as designers we can, much like poets were expected to
be able to do in the past, provide at least some direction for peoples'
lives to evolve towards ... mind tools for a better future. NOT more things
to buy.
