The aims of the Rights in Exile Newsletter are to:
• provide a global free-of-charge public information bulletin focusing on refugee legal aid,
• provide information to refugee lawyers/paralegals/advocates who do not have ready access to journals/library resources,
• highlight developments in refugee law and best practice,
• highlight lesser-known or otherwise obscured areas of refugee law
• provide current country of origin and country of asylum information relevant to the provision of legal aid, and
• occasionally to lobby on issues of the violation of refugee rights.
The overall aim of the IRRI Rights in Exile Programme is to stimulate the provision of pro bono legal aid to refugees and to raise the standards of the legal aid provided them.
• voluntary, pending funding
• minimum year-long commitment, with three-month trial period
• ~40 hours/month shared between the members of the editorial team (see note below on hours)
• location-independent online collaboration with co-editors, using Gmail, Google Docs, Tumblr, Facebook, and Twitter
Newsletter work runs in a monthly cycle that typically includes the following tasks:
• editing, redacting, summarizing: articles, job listings, conference announcements, and other relevant content
• soliciting articles and corresponding with contributors
• reviewing and editing submissions in line with FLAN style guidelines
• editing article titles, author bios, endnotes, and other preparation work to make articles ready for publication
• periodically updating style guidelines
• publishing the newsletter to the blog (including drafting the table of contents)
• announcing the new issue via email and social media
• publicizing selected articles via social media
Writing may be involved, such as preparing news articles that review unfolding situations or issues. The position also involves frequent communication with Themba Lewis. All editors are encouraged to solicit contributions. Where appropriate, submissions are refereed. Editors are responsible for securing permissions to reprint articles.
We are looking for co-editors who are reliable, self-motivated, dedicated, and committed to doing the considerable work required to meet the newsletter's deadline every month. Working as a team allows a little flexibility if one editor has an intractable commitment, but also means that occasionally editors will have to take greater responsibility for their part of the ~40 hours of work required for the completion, posting, and publicizing of the newsletter. The majority of work falls after the submissions deadline (the 15th of each month) and publication (1st of the month), especially in the last week of the month. Because of the collaborative nature of the position, being able to coordinate and communicate well and regularly with the other co-editors is very important, as is being able to courteously and professionally correspond with contributors throughout the submission cycle. Finally, and importantly, co-editors need to be meticulous and detail-oriented, with excellent writing and editing skills in British English, and interested in refugee issues.
The position allows the opportunity to gain valuable experience in editing, writing, and publishing, to keep up to date on refugee issues globally, and to be in touch with people working in the field all over the world. It requires dedicated and regular work, but is ultimately rewarding. As a relatively new publication there is wide scope for growth and creativity, both in terms of the editors’ position and input into the future of the newsletter itself.
