Hey Matt,
We had an artifact code for plastic in UMASS's excavations in Deerfield
village. Plastic sheeting was a particularly good diagnostic marker for
the late 20t century, as much of the village museum was constantly under
renovation and plastic sheeting was used in the restoration process.
We weren't systematic or typological about it--so we didn't break down
bakelites or other early plastics from later industrial plastic.
I don't think I have any profiles that show plastic, but I'll look and
see. I do remember some students being very upset that they had to
carefully excavate a plastic bag filled with potting fertilizer that sat
atop a 19th century privy.
Cheers,
Quentin

Does anyone know of any excavations where the recording of plastic artefacts and materials or plastic-bearing layers was important from a stratigraphic point of view? Are there any plans, sections, photos or context sheets that might illustrate this? Or do we tend not to record such recent deposits in detail?
