Department for Employment and Learning N.I. (DEL) funded PhD Studentship in
Intelligent transport systems, mobile technology, ICT and their impact on travel and time use
Applications are invited for a DEL funded PhD studentship tenable in the Faculty of Art, Design and the Built Environment at the Jordanstown Campus. http://research.ulster.ac.uk/info/researchopp/Travel.html
This project investigates the impact of ubiquitous mobile technology and ICT on personal and household travel and time use. Increasingly mobile technologies are being used within the development of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) with the behaviours of transport users being used to dynamically monitor transport systems. Mobile technologies however also allow transport users and more generally users of the built environment to utilise plan travel and activities in smarter ways. This study will utilise cloud technology and GIS to understand the transitions in behaviour taking place and impacts on travel choice and energy use. The study will also use GIS to assess comparisons in time-space characteristics of technology rich and technology poor households by assessing and modelling activity space.
This project is part of work being developed between the Built Environment Research Institute and the Computer Sciences Research Institute at the University and is jointly supervised by staff from these Research Institutes.
The candidate applying for this PhD project should have interest in mobile technology and ICT applications and their application to transport systems.
Applications are particularly encouraged from graduates with a background in transportation engineering, GIS or ICT.
