Dear all,
"But now I am going to do it with a group of 12 people from a research
institution, which will pay for the whole workshop and I can not
really ask for £600, it's just too much. How much would you say it's
a reasonable price for 2 mornings 9-1pm (a total of 8 hours), 12 people?"
You think that £600 is too much? To train 12 people in effect for a
day and half to 2 days (because that is the amount of time you will
spend in training and travel (even if local)? Not to mention the
amount of time spent preparing the presentation (which a professional
would also expect to charge for).
I ask if it is enough. Training is hard work, and should be rewarded
accordingly. There are plenty of people who already have well-paid
jobs who are happy to give talks on the side for a hobby and a bit of
pocket money. But if you want to do it professionally you have to
charge accordingly, or you are not taken seriously.
There are also, unfortunately, plenty of people who want something
without being prepared to pay a reasonable rate for it. They often
don't appear able to make the link between paying someone else for
their time and their own salaries. But like all things, you get what
you are prepared to pay for.
I would suggest a reasonable offer is £800 for a one-off course, with
a discount if the client wants two or more courses of the same type.
Then you could start by asking £700, and be prepared to negotiate a
little. How's that?
Regards,
Philip
